The future of the Social Media Agency

I was in California not long ago and had an opportunity to talk with Maggie Fox of the Social Media Group, Giovanni Rodriquez of The Conversation Group,as well as Adam Broitman and Earl Adams of Crayon.
These social media agencies (and others too) are doing amazing work for leading brands. As I was speaking with them, I could not help but think back to the days when the internet was first being taken seriously by businesses and any many different agencies came into being to provide the consulting and strategic services that the bigger more traditional advertising agencies were not experienced with. History seems to be repeating itself.
I do wonder what the future holds for these incredibly talented organizations. Will there be eventual consolidation? Acquisition by larger agencies or others? Organic growth to leadership positions?
While all of these may be possible – I think that the one thing that is certain. The social media agencies of today are filling a need and are successfully delivering on some of the best tought leading social media strategic work today.
